Ayurvedic massage: oil massage from Indian tradition

Ayurvedic massage originates from Indian Ayurvedic medicine. Warm oil — often sesame or specially chosen herbal oils — is massaged into the skin with rhythmic, flowing movements. The key difference from aromatherapy massage: more oil, more specific oil selection, slower tempo and a more holistic body orientation.

What sets ayurvedic massage apart from aromatherapy massage

Both massage types work with oil — but ayurvedic massage is significantly more oil-intensive and follows a different flow. The oil is applied in larger quantities and actively worked into the skin, not just applied on top. Traditionally the oil is selected based on body type (dosha); in western wellness studios this is usually simplified to sesame oil or herbal oil.

  • More oil than aromatherapy massage — skin absorbs it
  • Slower, rhythmic movement style along energy pathways
  • Oil selection traditionally based on body type — usually simplified in the West

What you should know

You undress for ayurvedic massage and are covered with sheets. The oil absorbs into the skin — plan some time afterwards and bring a change of clothes. Hair may be treated with oil in some variants (Shirodhara) — ask beforehand.

  • Undress, covered with sheets
  • Lots of oil — plan time afterwards or bring fresh clothes
  • Shirodhara (forehead oil pour) is a separate variant — not always included

What is the difference between ayurvedic massage and aromatherapy massage?

Aromatherapy massage combines classic massage strokes with essential oils. Ayurvedic massage uses significantly more warm oil, is slower and more rhythmic, and follows a traditional Indian body system. The scent is less prominent — instead the warmth and deep oil effect take centre stage.

What is Shirodhara?

Shirodhara is a special ayurvedic treatment where warm oil is poured continuously onto the forehead. It is not always included in every ayurvedic massage — ask when booking whether it is part of the treatment.
